Get started with New Box View

1. Introduction

This guide is to help staff familiarise with New Box View, which replaces Crocodoc as the online document viewer / marking and feedback interface for Blackboard assignments in January 2018.

Key dates

MyBeckett will be unavailable to all staff and students between the following dates / times:

  • Start: 1 January 2018 14:30
  • End: 3 January 2018 17:00

What will happen to existing Blackboard assignments?

During the MyBeckett upgrade, all existing Blackboard assignments will transfer to the new interface. Any feedback that you added before 14:30 on 1 January 2018 using Crocodoc will become read-only in New Box View, this means you will not be able to delete existing comments after this point in time. However, you will be able to add additional new comments if required. If you need to edit or delete any comments, please do so before the MyBeckett upgrade starts.

Note, this update does not affect Turnitin assignments.

2. Crocodoc vs New Box View

If you have previously used Crocodoc, the New Box View user interface is very similar in appearance. The main benefit of New Box View is that it provides better support for different file types and fonts. A full list of supported file types is available on the Box website.

Crocodoc

Here is an example document displayed in Crocodoc (staff view).

New Box View

Here is an example document displayed in New Box View (staff view). The marking and feedback panel to the right of the submission is unchanged. You can add inline comments and highlighting to the submission by clicking on the document, or selecting text within the document. Please note that New Box View does not currently support freehand drawing on a submission, or the printing of feedback annotations.

Instead of appearing in the margin, comments appear in boxes on top of the submission.

3. New Box View training sessions

Staff webinars (MyBeckett - Assignment marking and feedback using New Box View) are available to book via the MyBeckett & Learning Systems section of People Development online.

If you are unable to join one of our sessions, training recordings will be made available afterwards.

4. Student perspective

How will students access Blackboard assignment feedback?

After the January upgrade from Crocodoc to New Box View, students will access their feedback in the same way as usual (as long as you have released the marks and feedback). More information is available in our student FAQ on the Library website.

What will students see?

The marks and feedback panel on the right of the assignment will not change during the January upgrade.

Pointer comments left in Crocodoc are red with a yellow pop up. Pointer comments left in New Box View will be blue with a white pop up. Students can view comments one at a time by hovering their cursor over the pointer icon.

Other Crocodoc annotations may include inline text, drawings, highlights, area comments and strikethrough text. The image below shows how these annotations will look when opened in New Box View.
