Validating a distance learning course

Validating a Distance Learning Course

Distance learning courses are subject to the same validation processes as on campus courses, overseen by Quality Assurance Services. Access Quality Assurance Services' guidance here

There are some extra requirements for validating distance learning courses which are highlighted below.

NB: In order to spread the costs and resource requirements of developing and delivering distance learning over a manageable time period, it is advisable to develop courses for part-time delivery prior to offering full time options.

New Course Proposal

When you first decide to deliver a course via distance learning, please get in touch with the Distance Learning Unit (via distancelearning@leedsbeckett.ac.uk) who will be able to support your course development and assign an Academic Instructional Designer to your Course Development Team.

During New Course Proposal, there are additional forms that must be filled out for distance learning courses: the Resource Planning Agreement and the DL Costing Tool. You can download examples of both of these below.

The Resource Planning Agreement ensures that resources for the development of your distance learning course have been properly planned and secured from senior management. It requires signatories from the Director of Distance Learning, Dean of School, Head of Subject and either the Course Leader or Course Director.

The DL Costing Tool looks at the time and resource costs of developing and delivering your distance learning courses, mapping them to student numbers and revenue in order to show when the ROI will occur. This is very important as a large part of the content development is up front and lead times for distance learning are longer than campus courses.

Course Validation

Your Academic Instructional Designer forms part of your Course Development Team and can contribute to your Course and Module Specifications with regard to distance learning.

Your Academic Instructional Designer will also form part of your Validation event, representing the distance learning element of delivery.

You may also want to consider options and guidance for calendars and pricing. You can find out more on the pages below.
